My brother-in-law texted me a few days before Memorial Day and asked if I wanted to do a Murph with him. I was excited to try a new workout and so something different.
The workout
A Murph Challenge is when you:
- Run a mile
- Do 100 pull-ups
- Do 200 pushups
- Do 300 air squats
- Run a mile
All with a 20 lb weighted vest on to make it harder. It’s a workout created in honor of Lt. Murph, who was killed in action in Afghanistan. It’s a workout commonly done in the CrossFit community, but it’s been popular in the mainstream for a few years ago.
How did I do?
Overall, better than I thought. Yes I struggled, hardly made it through, and had to do alternates but I made it. I finished it in an hour and 10 minutes, burning over 900 calories.
Alternates:
Ran .5 miles but did 1.5 miles on the stationary bike. Used the lat pull-down machine to do “Pull-ups”. And towards the end, started doing knee-on-ground pushups to make it through.
Would I do it again?
Hell yes! I want to keep doing it at least a few times a year and I want to get better times and want to be able to do it without doing any alternates. How am I going to do that? By rucking with weight, and continuing to run training for my marathon. I look forward to doing this again and proving that I can to it better and faster, even if it’s just for myself.
