Running a 10k – with no training

Last weekend I ran a 10k I with very little training. Honestly it wasn’t the worst time, I actually ended up PR’ing on my 10k time. I definitely think that the environment, running around other people, pushed me to keep running.

Why did I decide to sign up?

My friend Cesar ran the Chevron marathon this year and it motivated me to sign up next year. I quickly started to look at having plans to begin running. I also looked for races to join to do benchmark runs along the year and came across the woodlands 10k. It was in early march and it gave me about a month and a half to train for it. I was set, and was doing great on my training plan for about two weeks and plans got derailed. When they did, instead of continuing, I passed on my entry to one of my friends that likes to run. Everything was good with that when about a week before he told me he couldn’t because of some family obligations. No worries, I signed up so I should of powered through from the beginning.
So here I was, two weeks out trying to find away to train for 6 miles when I haven’t be running at all. Luckily, I have continued to work out and my cardio was in a pretty good place. I didn’t want to injure myself so all I did was walk on the treadmill a couple of times.

A couple of days before, I did feel some strain on my it band and a bit on my knee. I was nervous, but I told myself that if I was really hurting I would stop or just walk the course. Luckily when I was there having people to run with was very motivational. I picked a guy in a blue shirt to follow and keep pace. When he would run, I would run. When he would stop, I would stop. It was a great way for me to keep going when I was really hurting on miles 1-4. After mile 4, I stopped at a water station, got some gatorade and water and I started seeing people along the route. That gave me so much motivation to keep going.

Motivation.

Running the last .5 mile was electric, people were lining up along the sides of the race cheering us on. I remember going through and loving how I was feeling because of the energy. I was super proud of myself for powering through, for being fit enough to complete, and for mentally getting through it. I surprise myself, and enjoy putting myself in these situations to see if I show up or hide. I am super thankful of my experiences, because I feel like I have all the motivation in the world to do anything I set my mind to.
